Ikea to Charge U.S. Customers for Plastic Bags

Philadelphia -- Beginning March 15, Ikea will charge customers five cents for disposable plastic bags. The company plans to eventually eliminate the use of all disposable bags in an effort to reduce pollution. 100 billion bags are thrown away by all U.S. consumers each year. Full Article

California to Limit Lawnmower Emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency granted California permission to implement tougher emission regulations on small engine machines. Requiring catalytic converters on low-horsepower engines, such as lawnmowers, is expected to reduce smog emissions by about 40 percent. Full Article

County Plans to Vaporize Landfill Trash

Fort Pierce, Fla. -- When completed, St. Lucie County's plasma-arc gasification facility will be the largest in the world. Curbs On Mercury Only Dent Global Threat: Experts

Chicago -- Mercury-containing switches, which are found in automobiles made prior to 2003, will now need to be removed before the vehicles are melted down for scrap. State to Target Pesticide Pollution

Sacramento -- A new initiative will make California the first state to set air pollution standards for pesticides. Some pesticides contribute to air pollution by releasing volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, that create smog. Pataki Seeks Greater Cuts in Mercury Emissions
